Dr. Roger Marsh is the founder and director of Raceway Ministry Resources. Born in Fort Worth, Texas in 1952, Dr. Marsh grew up assisting his father, a Baptist church deacon, in repair of the family automobiles, and in the process developed a fascination for cars and motorsports. In 1967, he began driving his first car, a 1955 4-door sedan, and then enjoyed street-rodding in a 1969 Chevelle Malibu for a few years. Hanging around local hot-rodders and making trips to the old Green Valley Raceway in northern Tarrant County was enough to put into the fabric of his life a love for motor sports and racing. In 1970, just after graduation from high school, Dr. Marsh accepted Christ as his Savior, and then in 1971 he sensed God's call to ministry. He graduated from the University of Texas in Arlington in 1975, acquired a Master of Divinity degree from Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary in Fort Worth in 1980, began pastoring in 1979, and then graduated from Baylor University with a Ph. D. in Church History in 1990. He now has pastored for nearly 23 years, and has continued his love for cars and motor sports. Hobbies still include maintaining and restoring a couple of cars that he still enjoys keeping up and going--a 1955 Chevy 2-door post that currently has the engine out for a refreshening; and a 1970 Chevy Nova, which serves as the daily driver. Dr. Marsh serves as pastor of the First Baptist Church of Tioga, Texas (pop. 754), and teaches Defensive Driving classes in Denton, Texas. Marsha, his wife, teaches at Pilot Point High School. The Marshes have two sons--Caleb, who is career guidance counselor at the University of Texas in Austin, and Travis, who is a football coach and teacher at Waco University High Schoo, in Waco, Texas. In 1997, Texas Alliance Raceway Ministries (TxARM) (www.txarm.org) began work at Texas Motor Speedway as the inaugural season of TMS began with the Coca-Cola 300 NASCAR Busch Series and Interstate Batteries 500 NASCAR Winston Cup races in the spring of that year. Dr. Marsh worked with the group as a volunteer, and then found himself serving on the Steering Committee for TxARM as it transitioned to an Executive Council. In 1998, he became Chairman of the TxARM Executive Council, a position he has held ever since. As such, he guides an Executive Council of 14 and leads over 150 volunteers in ministry to fans and others at Texas Motor Speedway, and has helped begin ministries at local dirt tracks in the North Texas area. Dr. Marsh also serves as Executive Director of the National Fellowship of Raceway Ministries (www.racewayministries.com), having been elected to that position at the January 2001 annual meeting. |
